Anonymity

YOUR IDENTITY IS PROTECTED
YOU WILL NEVER BE ASKED TO IDENTIFY YOURSELF
YOU WILL NEVER HAVE TO TESTIFY IN COURT

Crime Stoppers can offer anonymity due to a legal rule of evidence, where police do not have to identify a person who supplies information concerning criminal activity. In February of 1997, the Supreme Court of Canada (R. v. Leipert, 1997) decided callers to Crime Stoppers programs were entitled to the protection of this privilege.

How is my anonymity protected if submitting information by PHONE?

The Crime Stoppers tip line, 1-800-222-TIPS(8477), is staffed by trained personnel who receive, process and pass on tip information to the appropriate agency to investigate. Callers are given a code number, which is used in all subsequent calls, and they are never asked to identify themselves or provide any personal information. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display.

The call taker will record the information given to them in such a way to ensure no identity is revealed.

For example, if a caller were to say, “My brother-in-law is dealing drugs at 123 XYZ Street” the tip would be rewritten as, “The caller reports that a male is selling narcotics at 123 XYZ Street.”

How is my anonymity protected if submitting information ONLINE?

Central Alberta Crime Stoppers subscribes to TipSoft – a secure tip management application that directly transfers your information to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Tips submitted through this website are completely anonymous through encryption technology and IP addresses are not recorded.

After submitting your tip, you will be provided with your own unique tip number that you will use when checking the status of your tip or picking up your reward.

How is my anonymity protected if I receive a REWARD?

You will be asked to call back to Crime Stoppers for updates on your tip using the unique tip number given to you when you submitted your information. It is your responsibility to call back for updates and to obtain instructions on how to claim a reward.

When you call back and are eligible for a reward, a time will be arranged between you and a trained Crime Stoppers call taker. You will be directed to go to an undisclosed location and identify yourself only by the Crime Stoppers tip number you received and other information given to you by the call taker. The envelope with the cash reward will be given to you at this location once you identify yourself with the correct information given to you by Crime Stoppers.
